Marine Metadata Interoperability Project

by John Graybeal last modified 2007-09-27 00:23

The MMI project seeks to improve marine science data management by focusing on the interoperability of marine metadata. The project is heavily community-focused, with international membership and participation, and provides a lot of references and guides to people developing data solutions.

About MMI

MMI is developing the servers and software needed to provide community hosting of controlled vocabularies, enabling terms to be uniquely referenced and defined. The organization is working with communities and projects to create controlled vocabularies where those are needed, and to create processes for communities to develop and register their own vocabularies.

MMI references include pointers to existing and developing content standards and profiles, and MMI intends to begin providing feature comparisons of these specifications. MMI also references ongoing community efforts to develop cutting-edge interoperable solutions and best practices for marine data management.

UNOLS Data Management Best Practices Connection

For UNOLS MMI can distill existing guidance and best practices, and provide access to the wider marine community through space and announcements on the MMI web site. Should UNOLS begin using controlled vocabularies, MMI can provide registration services for the vocabularies, and Uniform Resource Identifiers for the terms in those vocabularies.

MMI also plans to identify connections between different community data management projects (such as this committee), so as to cross-fertilize good ideas and minimize conflicts and duplication of effort.
